DOWN BY THE RIVER

I was producer/director of ‘Down by the River’, the short documentary that explores the communities that chose to live on the floodplains in Somerset.

It was commissioned by Somerset Films and the Environment Agency.

In 2013, devastating floods destroyed homes and livelihoods, and people have been rebuilding ever since.

The real and present threat of climate change means the next massive flood is not a question of if but when. The question we asked was why stay. No one entertained the thought of leaving. The rivers are an essential part of life and home. Community togetherness formed around organising, planning, building flood defences, digging your neighbour's moat, and sharing sandbags in winter forms real bonds, gives purpose and makes a community.
